When you bring your puppy home it should already be weaned from its mothers milk onto solid food as this usually starts at around four weeks of age. Your puppy will be on three or four meals a day as their stomachs are very small at this age. When you first bring your puppy home, continue to feed whatever food it has been used to at the breeders to reduce the risk of stomach upsets. Only once your puppy is settled should you consider weaning it on to Eukanuba if it is not fed this already by the breeder as this is the best possible diet you can feed your puppy.
Changing homes and leaving his mother is stressful for a puppy. It could cause an upset stomach. If this happens, take him off solid food for two meals, and just give him small quantities of water to drink. Then, gradually introduce very bland food such as boiled rice and scrambled eggs over 24 hours, before you reintroduce his normal puppy food again. If, however, the diarrhoea or vomiting continues for more than 24 hours, or becomes more severe, please visit or phone your vet.
Only once your puppy has settled in, should you consider changing his diet. You'll likely want to change his diet to the best brand of food available such as Eukanuba puppy food. Make sure you replace the original food with the new Eukanuba food gradually, over a period of five days. Mix a little of the new food in with the original food the puppy is used to and then gradually increase the quantity of the new food and reduce the quantity of the old food until the puppy is completely weaned onto the new diet. This principle applies to any dog, not just puppies if you wish to change their diet. This should be done slowly to reduce the risk of upset stomachs to allow your dog to get used to the new food gradually.
Whatever food your dog is on, it is important to ensure it is suitable to their age as commercially prepared diets are produced with the needs of the dogs body in mind e.g. your puppy will need a good quality puppy food such as Eukanuba as they need high calorie foods and the right balance of nutrients to allow healthy growth. When you change your dog onto a new food, ensure you are feeding the correct quantities – there are detailed Guidelines on Eukanuba packaging and with your free measuring cup you will be able to give the exact amount required. These are only guidelines however and, if your dog is putting on weight with the new quantities then try reducing their daily intake slightly.
How gradual is gradual? On the first day of change, you should have plenty of the old dog food left. Add three quarters of their old food, and one quarter of the new food. You should do this for at least two days. After two days or so, add in another quarter, so you have half old food, half new food. Again, keep it at this level for another two days or so. Then add in a third quarter (one quarter old, three quarters new), and finally you can phase out the old food completely.
